Report of Locum Tenens Priest in Residence

06/12/2023

For months of December 2023 and January 2024

December 2023 seems a long time ago now that we are at the beginning of February.

Some events have faded into our collective memories, but I know there were occasions when we all came together to celebrate the birth of our Lord.

Sunday services continued as rostered with attendances steady. Both centres – HT and St G – experienced visitors to Sunday worship early in the month.

  • Nathalia welcomed the Uniting Church congregation on third Sunday as is customary and it was wonderful to see 30 or more people in HT that morning.
  • With Olga and Keith, I visited Pioneer Lodge to share in their Christmas service.
  • I officiated at a Blue Christmas Service at St George’s on 5th Dec. for those who were not able to feel joy at this time of year.
  • The Inter church Council presented a service of 9 Lessons and Carols in St George’s on 17th December. Some 75 people were in attendance. I opened the service with prayer.
  • As Christmas Eve fell on a Sunday it was a busy day with Services as normal in Nathalia and Numurkah in the morning.
  • I assisted at a wonderful ‘Children’s Service’ on Christmas Eve. The young people, some 15 of them, participated in activities and dressed the Crib. They were ably led by a number of adults from the congregation.

The weather on that day began hot and humid which resulted in a storm late in the evening delivering much rain and wind with lightning and thunder of course.

Midnight Mass began as normal but only 10 minutes into the service power was lost for the remainder of the service! Candles were lit, torches turned on, iPhones lit up and the piano brought into service for singing of the carols. A memorable service in more ways than one!! (Shades of how the early church functioned?)

Christmas Day services at Nathalia and Numurkah were good in their attendance despite the aftermath of the previous night’s weather.

All the while, during the month, I spent time preparing for worship and attending to correspondence and other matters.

2024

  • As I have done for the past number of years, I celebrated the Christmas Day liturgy for the Macedonian Orthodox people of Shepparton at St Augustine’s on Sunday 7th January. This necessitated moving Nathalia’s Sunday morning service to the Uniting Church – in exchange for their third Sunday visit.
  • Again, on Thursday 19th of January I celebrated the Macedonian Orthodox service of Baptism of Christ at St Augustine’s.
  • On a visit to NCN Health in Nathalia on 10th January for a meeting with one of our parishioners, I led a Prayer and Praise service for the residents of Barmah? Aged Care facility at the hospital.
  • On 2nd and 3rd of February I met with both couples whom I am preparing for marriage later this year – Jon and Sally at Wakiti Creek on 2nd March and Michael and Bianka for their Orthodox wedding at St Augustine’s on 11th May.
  • On 3rd February Fr Barry Slatter called at the Rectory to deliver two Paschal candles for 2024. He has done this for a number of years and we are most grateful for his generosity.

Rectory matters.

I few issues have impacted on the fabric of the building but have been/are being resolved/attended to by our very capable wardens and I will leave them to report on these.

The maintenance of the Rectory garden is proving too much for me (not an enthusiastic gardener) and Margaret (physically challenging). Whilst the grass/lawn is cut by others the garden bed, especially the SE corner has passed the point of no return. Volunteers would be most welcome to assist in resolving this matter.

Attended Inter Church Council with B. Patrick and W. Knight. World Day of Prayer 1st March U.C. Propose each denomination pay a fee of $30. Ecumenical Service on 9th February 2025 for Numurkah 150th Celebration.

MOTION: That the Parish pay the Inter Church Council the $30 fee.

  • Priest in charge report.

06/02/24 – 03/03/24

All rostered Sunday services were held in H.T. and St. George’s with attendances fluctuating a little.

I assisted in consuming pancakes which were served in the Parish Centre on Shrove Tuesday. The weather was unkind to say the least but we persevered especially a Warden who braved the elements to cook on the outside BBQ!

Ash Wednesday services were held at both centres.

Study sessions on ‘The Commandments’ after Sunday services at St George’s were well attended and well received.

I met with Macedonian couple for the final time before the rehearsal for their wedding on 11th May

Met with a newcomer from Nathalia who has begun attending Sunday services at Holy Trinity on a regular basis.

I attended the Diocesan Workshop on ANGLICAN POLLITY on 24th February.

The World Day of Prayer held in the Uniting Church was attended by myself and about 6 other parishioners on 1st March.

The wedding of Jon Barton and Sally Bailey was finally held at Wakiti Creek Resort on 2nd March beneath the trees as St Paul’s church building was not available due to it being moved to site the day previous.

Spent quite some time searching for church records from Holy Trinity from years 1965-70 at the request of the Registry but to no avail. Searches were carried out in Nathalia Hall cupboards and the garden shed. In Numurkah a cleanout commenced with John, Heather and Margaret in the storage garage. This revealed some very interesting old records in boxes but again of no interest. (Much of what was found should have been archived or destroyed long ago.)

A relatively quiet month with weekly services celebrated and some pastoral visiting in Nathalia

PC mtg. in Nathalia.

Interment of Ashes of Ane Gibson in Numurkah Lawn cemetery on 8th March.

Meeting with Rob re Easter services. I thank him for his assistance/suggestions and patience in these matters.

21/03 Service of Prayer, Praise at Banawah with 13 in attendance. Margaret Cobbledick played the piano.

On the same day I conducted a Communion service at Pioneer’s lodge ACH. 8 people came and sang some hymns with enthusiasm. The music was my voice!!

I attended the Chrism Eucharist at HT Cathedral Wangaratta on 26/03.

28/03   Maundy Thursday service drew few people unfortunately. However, we had one person who came from Nathalia.

29/03   Good Friday service this year was a Service of Reproach.

Easter day services in both centres were a great joy – 16 at Nathalia with 3 visitors and 24 at Numurkah with 4 visitors. A number of people commented on their experience of these events -positively.

Bp Clarence has invited – more like strongly suggested – that I attend the Diocesan Clergy Development days (4) at Bright. I will be away from Monday 15th to Thursday 18th April.

Advance notice          Margaret and I will be visiting our son and partner in Tasmania from 12th May to Saturday 18th May. Our daughter from WA will join us in the Rectory for a week from 12th May.
